Barthélémy Toguo - 2018
Barthélémy Toguo (1967, Cameroun), lives and works in Paris and Badjoun.
The work Reforestation was created for the exhibition Homo Planta presented at the Blachère Foundation. Originally from the small town of Mbalmayo, in Cameroon, where, in his own words, “man is in perfect harmony with nature,” Barthélémy Toguospent his childhood in a rich and varied plant environment, which has left a lasting impression on him. Today, he is even the one who imposes plants around him, as in his Paris studio where he has created a small garden.
For him, Homo Planta “is the dramatization of a universe that becomes totally vegetal. Suffering and beauty are part of his work. The characters become mutant vegetal bodies that start to dance. It is a choreography with lianas that move, leaves that touch each other, bodies that extend themselves. The flowers are clues to the celebration of life that takes place in these works. The exhibition evokes the presence of man in nature, in harmony. We must respect and protect the planet. When there are no more plants, it is death.”
