Emmanuelle Quertain - 2023

Gray light for a still life with a crystal glass

THE LOUNGE

The painterly investigation of Emmanuelle Quertain (1987, Belgium) is not limited to painting itself. Quertain explores the possibilities and limits of her medium by testing the image and the technique, as well as the presentation and status of the work.

The ability of certain colours not to unify, to declare themselves homogeneous (certain greys-greens, green-blues, pinks between orange and white, greens between yellow and brown) shows a doubt, a questioning that painting allows us to pose on the level of a perception of reality.

In a society where we are witnessing the mass overproduction of images, the eye is saturated, leading to the impression that we no longer see anything. Within this context, painting serves as Emmanuelle Quertain's way of stepping aside from this prevailing condition concerning the utilisation of images. It signifies her belief that there remains something yet to be truly seen.
