Richard Hawkins - 2009
Collage is a central technique and aesthetic in the work of American artist Richard Hawkins (b. 1961).
Much of his work quotes the underbelly of pop culture, often with a strong penchant for homoerotic imagery as well as celebrities, haunted houses, Greco-Roman statues and the kitsch.
He also works with sculpture and these new pieces see a fusion of both into the realm of painting.
Here two canvases are enmeshed into an unusually new form.
Hawkins’ has had solo shows at the Art Institute of Chicago, Hammer Museum and Tate Liverpool.
