Henk Somers - 2009

Untitled

There is little information about Henk Somers’ practise, which only serves to make the strangeness of this landscape painting more haunting.

This image depicts the exterior of a modern of a modernist apartment building - the common aesthetic of blocks in German or Eastern Europe.

A study in greys, we look at two identical windows and try to read narrative into their seriality.

This is a painting that raises questions - what is happening behind the window and sheer curtains? How can art convey meaning? What is the role of painting as a window on to the world?
