Martin Margiela - 2022

Smoke IV

Martin Margiela (b. 1957) is renowned for his avant-garde approach to fashion and art.

After graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1979, he co-founded Maison Martin Margiela in 1988.

His designs broke conventions, embracing deconstruction, upcycling, and anonymity, challenging traditional notions of luxury and authorship.

Margiela retired from fashion in 2009, pivoting to fine art, with a notable solo exhibition at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris curated by Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel in 2021.

Now working with Bernier Eliades in Brussels, his diverse visual practice spans various media, including painting, sculpture, installation, collage, and film.

Margiela believes that objects are always in a state of transformation, and he is intrigued by the traces of time.
