Zoran Mušič - 1990

Portrait of Ida

A survivor of the Dachau concentration camp, Zoran Mušič (1909–2005) turned towards silence and contemplation through painting.

He participated several times in the Venice Biennale, as well as being included in Documenta I in Kassel in 1955.

In the 1990s, Mušič spent most days alone, painting his wife or himself: his body gradually disintegrating and his face disappearing.

“I see my portrait like any other landscape, a landscape that reflects what is inside me,” he once said.

The works here, loaned by Alex Veervordt Gallery, are testament to his untiring quest to examine human existence.
