Tony Cokes - 2022

Pittsburgh.isms (Nobody really looks at anything)

Tony Cokes (b 1956) creates video works, installations and text works that recontextualize historical and cultural moments.

His signature style combines changing frames of text against backgrounds of solid bright colors or images, accompanied by musical soundtracks, using source materials including found film footage, pop music, journalism, philosophy texts, and social media.

Represented by Felix Gaudlitz, Cokes was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2024 and the Rome Prize in 2022–23 and has an upcoming solo show at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in 2025 following major surveys at the Haus der Kunst and Kunstverein in Munich.
