Gritli Faulha - 2023

Militant Joy

German artist Gritli Faulhaber (b. 1990) uses painting to rethink the medium’s history.

She has described herself as “less of a painter, and more of an artist whose research matter is painting”.  Her works are often made of groups of multiple paintings assembled together into compositions.

Faulhaber, who has exhibited with Gauli Zitter, is interested in the non-hierarchical placement of images, regardless of age or context. In 2020, Faulhaber started painting colourful dots whilst bed-bound suffering from a severe autoimmune disease.

Over the years this in-demand series has become a kind of coping strategy, whenever she couldn’t work, she could still produce the dots, swearing to only do so, if she couldn’t work otherwise.
