Renaud Suanez - 2021

Etude pour portrait (Modèle; Hélène)

Brussels-based French artist Renaud Suanez (b. 1995) creates intimate paintings that are fascinating contemporary takes on art historical techniques and aesthetics.

Still lives, portraiture and landscape are some of the traditional genres he reworks in his paintings.

There is a sensitivity and sense of chiaroscuro in this portrait work, echoing Caravaggio and 17th century painting, that was ideal reflection of Tanazaki’s essay at the heart of the show.

Suanez studied Drawing at ENSAV la Cambre, graduating in 2019 with the “coup de cœur des amis de la Cambre” prize.
