THE LOUNGE

Born in 1921, Delft, Netherland. Lived and worked in Belgium. He died in 2012.

“We always think that a painting is ahead of its time. This is not true, it’s the public that is behind the times. The painter is always influenced by his time, at the moment he lives.”

Abraham van den Boogaart, most commonly known as Bram Bogart (1921 - 2012), was a Belgianexpressionist painter, often associated with the COBRA group and the Art Informel. Focused on paint and the endless possibilities for the medium’s material, Bogart is an abstract artist, who enjoyed to explore how the ‘script’ of a painting or the ‘non-repetitive element of rhythmical brush strokes’ could imbue abstraction with a meaning. During his life-long career, he artist was engrossed on the formal concerns of painting, goingthrough stylistic changes, from an early period of figuration, followed by cubist geometric abstraction, gestural abstraction and finally sensually coloured sculptural paintings with heavy impasto of paint - for the last of which, he became widely acclaimed for.

Bram Bogart did many exhibitions some of them being at: Cobra Museum of Modern Art, Amstelveen (2012); Kunsthalle, Recklinghausen (2005); PMMK, Museum of Modern Art, Ostend (1995); Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (1964) and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (1959), Zonzucht, Vigo Gallery, London, United Kingdom (2017), Lousy Jane, VigoGallery at Frieze Masters, London, United Kingdom (2017), Witte De Witte, Saatchi Gallery, London, United Kingdom (2017), The Monochromes, Borzo Gallery, Amsterdam, TheNetherlands (2016), Richard Gallery, Paris, France (2014), A Master of Matter, Cobra Museum, The Netherlands (2012), Bram Bogart: On the Roof in Paris, Galerie Richard, Paris, France (2012).
