The changing nature of war

Can traditional military strategies address modern conflicts? Join General Rupert Smith and Charles Stuart as they explore the utility of force in today’s world.

In an era where the nature of conflict is rapidly evolving, General Rupert Smith provides an essential exploration of modern warfare. Drawing from his vast experience, including command roles in the Gulf War, Bosnia, and as NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Smith offers a unique perspective on the challenges of contemporary military engagements. In a thought-provoking discussion with moderator Charles Stuart, this event will delve into the relevance of Smith’s theories in today’s world, with a particular focus on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. How do traditional military strategies hold up in these complex and politically charged environments? What lessons can be drawn from Smith’s concept of “war amongst the people” as we witness these conflicts unfold? Join us for an evening of  insights and rigorous analysis with one of the most distinguished military minds of our time.

speaker

Rupert Smith

General Sir Rupert Smith, a highly decorated retired British Army officer, had a 40-year military career that significantly influenced modern military strategy. Born in 1943, Smith was educated at Haileybury, Imperial Service College, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the Parachute Regiment in 1964, rising through the ranks and serving in diverse, often dangerous regions, including Northern Ireland, Africa, and the Balkans. His leadership earned him accolades such as the Queen’s Gallantry Medal and the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his command during the Gulf War. As Major General, he led the 1st Armoured Division in Operation Granby, receiving the U.S. Legion of Merit. In the 1990s, Smith commanded UNPROFOR in Bosnia, helping lift the siege of Sarajevo and contributing to the Dayton Agreement that ended the Bosnian War. He was later knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) and led operations in Northern Ireland before becoming NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Smith's experiences in politically complex conflicts led him to write *The Utility of Force: The Art of War in the Modern World*, where he argued that traditional warfare concepts are less relevant in modern conflicts. Since retiring in 2002, Smith has been a prominent military thinker, offering insights into the evolving nature of conflict.
