Europe’s biggest problem: breaking free from pessimism

How europe can reclaim its confidence and navigate a shifting world order – an incisive conversation with Europe expert Caroline de Gruyter.

Europe is stronger than it believes, yet its greatest challenge is its own pessimism. While external threats—from an expansionist Russia to an unpredictable United States—force the continent to confront its vulnerabilities, the reality behind the scenes tells a more dynamic story. European integration is deepening, public support for the EU is at a record high, and global shifts are not just creating risks and challenges but also new opportunities.

Acclaimed journalist and Europe expert Caroline de Gruyter offers an analysis of what is really happening behind closed doors in European capitals. She argues that the greatest risk Europe faces is not external aggression, but internal self-doubt. How can the continent overcome its ingrained pessimism? What does the rise of illiberalism mean for European unity? And how can Europe turn its challenges into strengths?

Moderated by Maarten Rabaey, this conversation will go beyond the headlines to explore the hidden dynamics shaping the future of Europe. Expect a discussion that cuts through the noise and offers fresh perspectives on the continent’s evolving role in the world.
