Bart Weetjens is a celebrated social entrepreneur and Zen priest known for his innovative contributions to global humanitarian efforts. In 1995, he founded APOPO, a non-governmental organization that trains rats to detect landmines and tuberculosis, saving countless lives and enabling over a million African farmers to return to their villages safely. Bart's groundbreaking work with HeroRATS has earned him international recognition, including the prestigious Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship and being named a Global Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the World Economic Forum. Additionally, Bart is an Ashoka Fellow and a Fellow of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, acknowledged for his impactful and sustainable solutions to social challenges. He also co-founded La Grande Terre, a permaculture and wellbeing center in the French Ardennes.
Bart has been practicing Zen for more than 30 years and is an ordained monk in the Sotoshu tradition (Deshimaru-lineage). He has served on the board of the European Zen Buddhist Association since 2015.
